8. What about the future?

Not all of the duties in the Act are introduced on 2 December 1996. Other changes will be introduced over a number of years. These later duties mean you will have to take reasonable steps to:

  • change any policies, practices or procedures which make it impossible or very difficult for a disabled customer to use your services;
  • provide extra help and services to allow a disabled customer to use your services; and
  • remove or alter physical barriers that stop a disabled customer from gaining access to your service, or to provide your service in a different way.

The Government will provide information about these before they are introduced. In the meantime you may wish to read booklet DL80 “The Disability Discrimination Act - Access to goods, facilities and services” from the Disability Discrimination Act Information Pack.
