400 Bad request
Check you have typed in the URL correctly as often this means the server cannot understand what you have requested.

401 Unauthorized
The page has been password protected and it sees you as being an unauthorized viewer.  Quite often you can gain access if you register to use the service, however, there may be a fee to pay.

403 Forbidden
See Error 401 Unauthorized as it relates to the same error

404 Not Found
Your web browser cannot find the page. This may be because either the page has been deleted or moved without the link being updated. This will normally occur is you use a link or recall a web address from your history or favorites list. Try this web page again later if you get the same error message delete it from your favorites list and don't visit this web page again.

503 Service Unavailable
This means the server is busy as too many people are accessing it.  If you see this message move onto another server and try again later.

Final Assessment

You need now need to decide. Has it been too easy?  Do I need more info?

So choose:

If you fail you can return for more tuition; if you pass you can feel confident that you are saving your company money!

More common errors.....

Bad file request
You will normally see this error message when using forms.  It indicates that either your browser cannot handle forms or the form has been badly designed.  If this occurs try finding an email address on the web site and send them some email instead.

Connection refused by host
(See error 401 and 403

Failed DNS lookup
This means that the domain address you used cannot be located on the domain named server (DNS).  It may mean that no-one own the domain name you typed in or you may have made a mistake typing the URL in.  Check your typing first.

File Contains No Data
This means that the web page you are trying to access is blank.  You might try this page again later or you could try refreshing your screen (See Skills area below to find out how)

Host unavailable
The server may be offline for one reason or another.  If you receive this error message, try again another day rather than in the same session.

Host Unknown
This means that your browser could not find the server where the page is.  It may be that your computer has disconnected. Check your connection to see if you have come offline if not, try again later to see if it can be found.  If the server can still not be located, it may be that the server no longer exists.

Traffic Jam
If your you feel you are waiting and waiting for a web page you have just requested, it may be that your page request is stuck in a virtual traffic jam.  If you feel you have been waiting excessively for information stop the transition and refresh your screen
(see skills area to find out how)

Too Many Connections
This means the server is busy.  If this occurs you can either try again later at a quieter period, or refresh your screen (see skills area to find out how)

Unable to locate host / Unable to locate server
(see unknown host)

Skill Area

  • With many of the error messages you receive, it may be a case of refreshing your screen. To do this:

  • Stop any further transition by clicking on the STOP button found in your menu bar.

  • Then click on the REFRESH button, the information will be automatically requested again without you typing in the address again
