  Internet Explorer Tutorial

Revisit a web address from a history list

Outcome:
To examine and utilise the browser history list and recognise the need to use this facility for business.  You will examine its functions and explore its customisable options.

Objectives:

  • To activate and use this facility
  • Alter the History options to allow additional date storage

Knowledge Area

If you absorbed the last section, you will be able to identify the significance of a "hyperlink history" when surfing and be able to use techniques to utilise your browser link history.  However, you will also be aware that this history is only available during a session, and once the browser has been switched off the history  is wiped clean.

Fortunately, Explorer contains a facility which can stored a longer history of the web sites you have visited.  As your browser logs your session history, "History" logs the session for the whole of the day and not just for a particular session, and so you can view this history for a longest time period.

Final Assessment

Once you have completed and fully understood this section, you need to decide: Has it been too easy?  Do I need more info? Where do I want to go from here?

So choose:

If you fail you can return for more tuition; if you pass you can feel confident that you are saving your company time and money!

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The history list is only a feature in later version of Internet Explorer.  Therefore if you cannot see this HISTORY button within your browser menu bar, this feature is probably unavailable.

Skills Area

To view your history list, click on the history button found in your browser location bar.

A panel will then appear to the left of your screen.  This is the browser's history list.

This panel has a number of features that allow you to track and pin-point the web pages and sites you have visited.

Features of a History List Panel

To return to any of the web page or web site you have visited, simply click on the link and your browser will take you to the web page associated with that link.

Displaying Additional Dates in your History Panel

Explorer not only will keep a record of a days history, but you can also save list history for a number of specified days.  To do this:

Click on TOOLS found in your browser's menu bar and then choose INTERNET OPTIONS. A Panel similar to the one below appears.

The third lower portion of this box is entitled HISTORY and in this portion you will find a option box with a number in it.  It normally defaults to 1, and indicates that the history will only be recorder for 1 day.  You can change this number to any figure you like depending on how much history you would like your browser to record.  Once you have completed this, click OK
